Architect to the Sky: Adrian Smith

Adrian Smith was the History Center's Local Legend in 2011.

Adrian Smith is the world’s foremost experts of supertall towers. His extraordinary body of work includes some of the world's most recognizable landmark structures. He designed the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which is currently the world's tallest building.

However, Smith's Jeddah Tower, set to open in 2020, will soon supersede it. Jeddah Tower represents an unprecedented exercise that dares to go beyond the one kilometer threshold, a height that seemed all but impossible only a few years ago.

Jeddah Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia will feature the world's highest observation deck at 2,178 feet off the ground.

Adrian Smith’s unique design approach considers each project holistically, taking into consideration site orientation, climate and geography, cultural and social influences. He has embraced the principle of “On Site” power generation using the sun, wind and geothermal sources to reduce reliance on local infrastructure.

The Burj Khalifa is more than twice the height of the Empire State Building.
