Charles Clarke

NEW STORY DESCRIPTION
Charles F. Clarke Sr., a former lieutenant of engineers in World War I, made significant contributions both in his military and civilian life. He attended the first officer training camp at Fort Sheridan at the beginning of the war and went on to serve in France, where his leadership and service were commendable. Clarke’s military experience shaped his later roles in public service, including his time as mayor of Lake Forest from 1943 to 1946, and as an alderman in the same city.

After his military career, Clarke spent his professional life with Halsey, Stuart & Co., retiring as a vice president. In addition to his business and political pursuits, he was actively involved in charitable work, serving as a director of Catholic Charities and the Community Fund of Chicago. He also played a key role in the Catholic Church Extension Society and was on Loyola University's first board of lay advisers.

Clarke passed away in 1971, at the age of 78.
