Marshall Strenger

Lieutenant Colonel Marshall C. "Marsh" Strenger was a decorated World War II veteran, civic leader, and longtime business and community figure in Lake Forest, Illinois. A member of the pioneering Pratt family, Strenger graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering before serving with distinction in the 12th Air Force during World War II.

Strenger flew 72 combat missions, with some of his most challenging work occurring at Anzio in January 1944. He led his squadron through two difficult missions on January 19 and 20, targeting German troop concentrations, which resulted in heavy casualties for the Army Air Force. His service across Europe also included numerous bombing raids against strategic targets. For his bravery, Strenger received several honors, including the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, an Air Medal with seven clusters, Four Battle Stars, the Croix de Guerre, and two Distinguished Unit Citations.

After the war, Strenger returned to Lake Forest, where he ran his family’s business, H.T. Strenger Inc., a local plumbing company. He was deeply involved in local politics and community affairs, serving two terms as an alderman and as mayor of Lake Forest from 1987 to 1990. During his tenure, he oversaw the rebuilding of the lakefront beach and played a key role in the expansion of Lake Forest Hospital, where he served on the board for 40 years.

Strenger also remained active in the Air Force Reserve, attaining the rank of Colonel. He died in Lake Forest in 1994, aged 76.
