A true American hero. As the commander of Apollo 13, astronaut Jim Lovell led his crew through the life-or-death struggle to return home after an explosion 200,000 miles from Earth. Captain Lovell was first selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1962. Before retiring in 1973, he flew a total of four missions during the golden age of space exploration, logging over 700 hours in space.

Mount Marilyn, a lunar mountain, was named by Captain Lovell for his wife Marilyn during Apollo 8’s orbits around the moon. After informal recognition by succeeding astronauts, it was officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union in 2017.
Among many honors, Captain Lovell has been awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Captain Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago at Great Lakes Naval Station has been named in his honor.
