In 1801, Cane Ridge, Kentucky was the site of a large camp meeting that drew thousands of people. It is considered a landmark event of the Second Great Awakening, an evangelical movement promoted by Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian and other ministers in the early 19th century.

John Heyl Vincent was one of the founders of the New York Chautauqua and leader of the American Sunday School Movement. On at least one occasion, he visited Lake Bluff.
