The School of St. Mary

Class photo of the School of St. Mary 8th Grade during the 1953-53 school year. Students are seated in the classroom in northwest room of the old north school building, on the 2nd floor.

The Church of St. Mary was established in 1875 and the parish built a school, with five classrooms, in 1917. The third floor was used to house the original five Sisters of Mercy who taught at the school. Students were offered a two-year commercial course at the end of eighth grade until area high schools were established. Monthly tuition for the school in 1933 was $1.

In the 1950s, eight classrooms, a library, gym and cafeteria were added. A new campus for pre-school through third grade was built on Everett Road near St. Patrick’s Church in the 1990s. The older students remained at the original campus.
