Robert Lamont Chalmers was born in Rattray, Scotland in 1884. Jean Brown Lindsey was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1895. The two met and married in the U.S.
Robert worked as a gardener on the Robert J. Thorne Estate on Sheridan Road where the family lived.
In Lake Forest, two children were born to the couple – son Robert Jr. and daughter Florence. Following graduation from Miami University in Ohio, Robert Jr. served as a Captain in a U.S. Army Medical Unit that accompanied General Douglas MacArthur to Japan.
